This month we received no new submissions for this category (Hint: if you want to be featured here - let me know!), so I'm reaching back into my memory to highlight a passionate kid I met in July 2012.
My family and I were touring the Canadian Rocky Mountains during the northern summer when, during our return road trip to Vancouver, we stopped in at a little town in British Columbia called Grand Forks. As it turned out, we had arrived there on July 1st - Canada Day!
The town was abuzz with all things Canadian and the national colours - red and white - were everywhere. All manner of Canadian themed things were being celebrated - even the "mounties" (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) were dressed up in ceremonial uniforms.

The streets of this small town were lined with market stalls selling everything from local fruits, berries and vegetables to jewellery and furniture and everything in between. Behind one of these stands, a boy of around 10 years old was tying and selling red and white flies of his own design for a "toonie" (Canadian $2 coin) each.

While I'm certain these flies would catch fish, the boy was tying purely for his love of fly fishing, fly tying and his home country and the flies were meant to be decorative only. I bought two of his flies, and one has been hooked onto the back of a special cap of mine for the past 11 years, only being removed once to take a photo of it (below) for this post. As I look at this fly, I wonder what became of him and hope he has continued his love of fly fishing and fly tying into his adult years.
